Why headlights go cloudy
Headlights go cloudy and yellow over time as the UV in the sun breaks down the plastic lens. It’s not just a looks thing, hazy headlights throw less light on the road, so night driving is genuinely dimmer and less safe. I restore them by sanding back the damaged outer layer and refinishing the lens so it’s clear again, and I do it at your place across the Hibiscus Coast while I’m there.
Modern headlights are polycarbonate plastic with a protective coating. Years of sun, heat and road grime wear that coating away, and once it’s gone the plastic underneath oxidises, which is the yellow, foggy haze you can see. It happens to almost every car eventually, and it gets worse the longer it’s left.
What’s included in a headlight restoration
What the job involves:
Mask off the surrounding paint to protect it
Wet sand the lens through progressive grits to remove the oxidised layer
Machine polish and refine the plastic back to clarity
Seal the lens to slow the haze coming back
What restoration does for you:
Clearer glass: the yellow haze comes off and the lens looks close to new.
Better light at night: a clear lens lets the beam through properly, so you actually see more of the road.
A fresher looking car: cloudy headlights make a tidy car look tired and older than it is. Clearing them lifts the whole front end.
Cheaper than replacing: new headlight units are expensive. Restoration gets most of the way there for a fraction of the cost.
Common questions
How much is headlight restoration?
It’s $35 as an add-on when I’m already there for a groom. Heavily damaged lenses can need more work, and I’ll flag that before I start.
Does it last?
I seal the lens after restoring it to slow the haze returning. How long it holds depends on how much sun the car lives in, but you’ll get a good stretch of clear lights, and it’s easily refreshed down the track.
Can you fix any headlight?
Most cloudy, yellowed plastic lenses restore really well. If a lens is cracked or damaged inside the unit rather than just hazed on the surface, that needs replacing, not restoring, and I’ll tell you honestly which it is.
Do I need to be home?
Not the whole time, but I do need access to the car plus power and water. Headlight restoration runs off a machine polisher, so a power point is essential for this one. Once I’m set up you’re welcome to leave me to it.

$35 as an add-on when I’m already there for a groom. Tack it onto a Basic, Classic or Best Man and it’s done while I’m working on the rest of the car.
Badly gone or oversized lenses can take a little longer, so if they’re heavily damaged I’ll let you know before I start.
